Sambhar Watershed Update, August 2011

The watershed project in the Sambhar Salt Lake region of Rajasthan has begun, with committees having been formed and work having started recently. See below for a full report.

The beginning

In the first quarter of the project, watershed structures will be constructed in eleven villages – Kotri, Jhag, Gudda, Ujoli, Kishanpura, Bhilawat, Sinodiya, Bawali, Mohanpura, Habaspura, and Solwata. Village meetings have been conducted with the members of the watershed committee to familiarize the community with the project. Roles and responsibilities have also been assigned to each committee member.

In the last three months, work has begun as per schedule in Kotri and Jhag (presented in detail below). The groundwork has been done and the construction of the structures will begin by the end of August. In September work will begin on two more structures in Habaspura and Ringi as well.

The committee is regularly testing all of the water sources that fall in the watershed area.
