The 100-odd villages around the Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan suffer from a crippling lack of safe drinking water because of drought conditions and saline groundwater. FORRAD and Manthan have teamed up to install solar-powered reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration plants in five villages to take this salty water and make it sweet. Watch the slideshow below. In collaboration with the local grassroots organization Manthan Sanstha, FORRAD has installed solar-powered reverse osmosis (RO) units to filter the salty water in three villages (Sinodiya, Jhag, and Bhopa ki Dani), with two more plants slated for installation in Mordikala and Solawata. The locations for these two additional units have been finalized and the RO units have been prepared for installation by the Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI). Download the most recent water mapping results from the Sambhar Salt Lake region of Rajasthan (PDF). The tests were done in the pre-monsoon and monsoon periods of 2011. The post-monsoon testing has not yet been completed. |
